Chapter 18

The end of July passed into August and the workload became daunting. Cameron was true to his word and we focused on our studies, sometimes apart, giving us a little diversification from living out of each other’s pockets.

Friday nights became our date night where Cameron and I went off campus for dinner. Not once did I regret missing happy hour and all the drinking, and we still wound up at The Club later in the evening to dance the night away. Saturday night after work, we relaxed in the common room, played cards or watched a movie with everyone. Sunday morning I spent with the girls catching up or studying so I had free time in the afternoon to spend with Cameron.

Hours slipped away as we explored and experienced all the city of Toowoomba had to offer. Cameron drove me everywhere. He seemed enraptured to spend time with me, and I was a willing participant to experience anything he could think of to do and vice versa. We went go-cart racing, rock-climbing, borrowed bikes off our friends and went for a ride, played squash or tennis; went picnicking or on bush walks and ended up nearly every Sunday afternoon out somewhere having coffee or a beer somewhere. He loved going somewhere new all the time, insisting we never go to the same place twice. We tried all the trendy cafés on Margaret Street across the road from Queens Park, drove all the way out to Crow’s Nest to visit the Cuckoo Clock shop, and even ventured to Murphy’s Creek down the range one day and ate way too much SeatOnFire chilli chocolate from the local store.

I had seen more of the Toowoomba in the past few months with Cameron than I had in the entire past two years of living here. My confidence had been restored and uni was going well. Everything was thanks to Cameron.

One night after working at the tavern, I drove back to campus and managed to grab a late meal in the dining hall before the kitchen closed. Cameron waited with me as I chowed down crumbed fish and chips and cleared my dishes away.

As I was walking back to my block with Cameron, his hand felt clammy in mine; his stride a little off pace. I stopped and looked up at him with concern. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I was wondering if you had any plans for tonight?” he asked turning his hand around in mine and adjusting his hold.

“Nope. I need a shower and would like an early night. I’m stuffed.”

“Do you want to come over to my room for a shower with me and then maybe watch a movie? I went shopping today and downloaded some new movies off the Net.”

“That sounds nice. I’ll grab my things and come on over. See you in five minutes or so.”

“See you soon.”

I let go of his hand and made my way into my block.

Veering via Kel’s room, I made a quick stop to say hello before she went out with Matt for the evening.
